How to Dye Polyester and Synthetic Fabric with Rit DyeMore

Polyester and other synthetic fibres need a different dyeing method than cotton or linen. Rit DyeMore for Synthetics is formulated for fabrics such as polyester, acrylic, acetate and synthetic blends, but the key to good colour is sustained high heat. For DyeMore projects, the stovetop method is essential.

This guide walks through fibre checks, equipment, temperature, timing and aftercare so you can plan a synthetic-fabric dye project with realistic expectations.

Is Rit DyeMore right for your fabric?

Start with the care label. DyeMore is the appropriate Rit dye family when a fabric contains a substantial amount of polyester, acrylic or acetate. Rit commonly directs customers to DyeMore when synthetic content is 35% or more. If the fabric is mostly natural fibre and contains less synthetic material, Rit All-Purpose Dye may be the better choice.

Nylon can also take DyeMore, but it often absorbs dye much faster and can turn darker than expected. Watch nylon projects closely and remove them from the dye bath when the colour is right.

Why the stovetop method matters

Synthetic fibres need water at about 93°C (200°F) or hotter to accept DyeMore effectively. A household washing machine does not maintain the required temperature, so DyeMore should be used in a stainless-steel pot on the stovetop.

Choose a pot large enough for the item to move freely. If fabric is packed tightly, the dye cannot circulate evenly and you are more likely to see streaks or uneven areas.

How to dye polyester with Rit DyeMore

  1. Estimate the dry fabric weight. One bottle of DyeMore can dye up to about 0.9 kg (2 lb) of dry fabric. Rit recommends doubling the dye quantity for 100% polyester or when you want a bold, deep colour.
  2. Remove stains and pre-wash. Wash the item in warm, soapy water without fabric softener. Dirt, oils, finishes and stains can affect how evenly the fabric takes dye.
  3. Fill the pot with enough water. The fabric needs room to move freely. Rit uses about 11.4 L (3 gal) of water for each 0.45 kg (1 lb) of dry fabric as a working guideline.
  4. Add dish detergent. Add about 5 mL (1 tsp) of liquid dish detergent to help promote more even dyeing.
  5. Heat the water. Bring the water to about 93°C (200°F) or hotter, just below a full boil.
  6. Shake and add the DyeMore. Shake the bottle thoroughly, then add the dye to the hot water and stir well.
  7. Wet the fabric first. Pre-wet the item in warm water, then carefully place it into the dye bath.
  8. Maintain a low simmer and stir continuously. Keep the dye bath close to 93°C (200°F) or hotter. Stir slowly and continuously so every part of the fabric moves through the dye. The first 10 minutes are especially important for preventing uneven colour.
  9. Allow enough dyeing time. A DyeMore bath can take from about 10 minutes to one hour depending on the fibre and desired shade. Polyester and polyester-cotton blends should generally stay in the bath for at least 30 minutes. Nylon can colour much faster.
  10. Remove the fabric when the colour looks right. Remember that wet fabric usually appears darker than it will after rinsing and drying.
  11. Use ColorStay when appropriate. If the blend also contains cotton, linen, rayon or ramie, Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative can be used immediately after dyeing and before washing when appropriate for the project.
  12. Rinse and wash. Rinse first in warm water, gradually moving to cooler water until the rinse water runs clear. Then wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse and dry.

What if the fabric already has colour?

Existing colour matters because the new dye blends visually with what is already there. On synthetic garments, colour remover is usually not a reliable way to return the item to white. It is often more practical to overdye with a darker or compatible shade.

Printed patterns, logos and contrasting areas can also react differently, so expect the new colour to mix with the original design. Sun damage, bleach damage and worn areas may dye unevenly because the fibre itself has changed.

Tips for more even colour

  • Test first when possible. A swatch, hidden area or spare piece can show how the fibre and original colour will respond.
  • Use a roomy pot. Free movement is one of the simplest ways to reduce streaking.
  • Keep the heat high and steady. Synthetic fibres need sustained heat throughout the dyeing process.
  • Stir continuously. Do not let fabric sit folded against the bottom or side of the pot.
  • Watch blends carefully. Different fibres in the same fabric can absorb dye at different rates, so the final colour may have a heathered or slightly varied appearance.
  • Plan around the starting colour. Dye adds colour; it does not paint over the fabric. A dark starting colour limits how light the final result can be.
