Before you start: check the fibre content

When should you use Rit Color Remover?

Colour removal is useful when you want to make a major colour change and the existing shade would interfere with the new one. It can also help prepare faded, discoloured or incorrectly dyed compatible fabric for a fresh dye bath.

Do not expect every garment to become factory-white. Some fabrics lighten to white or off-white, while others retain some undertone. The goal is to create a more neutral and even starting point so the new dye has less existing colour to compete with.

How to use Rit Color Remover

Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the directions on the Color Remover package. For a controlled small-batch project, the container or stovetop method gives you a good view of how quickly the original colour is lifting.

  1. Pre-wash the item. Wash it in warm, soapy water to remove dirt, oils and finishes that could interfere with the process.
  2. Prepare enough hot water for free movement. Use a plastic container, stainless steel sink or stainless steel pot large enough for the fabric to move freely. For the container method, aim for about 60°C (140°F). The stovetop method uses hotter water kept at a low simmer.
  3. Add Color Remover. Mix the recommended amount thoroughly into the water before adding the garment.
  4. Wet and submerge the fabric. Pre-wet the item, place it into the bath and make sure all areas can move through the solution.
  5. Stir and watch the colour change. Colour can begin lifting quickly. Some fabrics lighten in about 10 minutes, while others can take up to about 20 minutes.
  6. Remove once sufficiently light. When the fabric has reached a white, off-white or suitably light base for your project, take it out of the bath.
  7. Rinse and wash. Rinse as directed, then wash in warm water with a mild detergent. Rinse and dry before evaluating the final base colour.

If you are working with a large item or a washing machine, follow the package-specific washing-machine directions instead of simply scaling up the container method.

Choose the right dye for the new colour

Once the old colour has been removed as much as practical, choose the dye according to fibre content rather than colour alone.

For natural fibres and rayon

  • Remove visible stains before dyeing. Stains and damaged areas can absorb dye differently from the rest of the fabric.
  • Give the fabric room to move. A cramped dye bath can lead to uneven colour.
