Black clothing can fade from repeated washing, sunlight and everyday wear, but a new dye bath can often bring back a deeper, more even black. The most important first step is choosing the right Rit formula for the fibre content of your garment.
For mostly natural fibres such as cotton, linen, silk, wool, rayon, ramie and nylon, use Rit Black All-Purpose Liquid Dye, Black All-Purpose Powder Dye or the convenient Rit Back to Black Dye Kit. If the garment contains 35% or more polyester, acrylic or acetate, choose Rit DyeMore Graphite and use the stovetop method instead.
Always check the care label before you start. Fibre content determines both the dye formula and the method you should use.

The Rit Back to Black Dye Kit is a convenient choice when your goal is to refresh faded black clothing or overdye a compatible garment to black. It includes Jet Black All-Purpose Dye, ColorStay Dye Fixative and gloves, so the two main colour-care steps are grouped together.
Standalone Black All-Purpose Liquid Dye or Black All-Purpose Powder Dye is useful when you already have the other supplies you need, when you are dyeing multiple pieces or when you simply prefer the liquid or powder format. One liquid bottle or two powder packages can dye up to about 0.9 kg (2 lb) of dry fabric under standard conditions; deeper shades or larger loads may require more dye.
Overdyeing can turn many compatible garments black, but the starting colour still matters. Dye is transparent rather than opaque, so the original colour can influence the final black. Light or medium starting colours are generally easier to cover than very dark, saturated or strongly contrasting colours.

Many jeans are cotton-rich, which makes Black All-Purpose Dye or the Back to Black Dye Kit a practical choice for refreshing faded black denim. However, stretch denim can contain polyester or other synthetic fibres, so check the label before choosing the formula.
If the jeans contain 35% or more polyester, acrylic or acetate, use DyeMore Graphite. High-synthetic denim requires the stovetop method and sustained high heat; a standard washing-machine cycle does not maintain the temperature DyeMore needs.
Dye can refresh colour, but it cannot repair damaged fibres. Areas weakened by bleach, prolonged sun exposure, abrasion or chemical damage may absorb dye differently from the surrounding fabric. Seams, thread, logos, coatings and decorative details can also contain different fibres and may remain lighter or change colour at a different rate.
When possible, test a hidden area or a spare piece of similar fabric first. This is especially useful when the garment has an unknown finish, a strong original colour or visible damage.

Often, yes, if the fabric is dyeable with the selected Rit formula. The original colour will mix visually with the new dye, so lighter colours are generally easier to overdye to black than very dark or highly saturated colours.

All-Purpose Dye is intended for natural fibres and nylon. If the fabric contains 35% or more polyester, acrylic or acetate, choose DyeMore instead.
As a general guideline, one bottle of Rit liquid All-Purpose Dye or two packages of powder can dye up to about 0.9 kg (2 lb) of dry fabric. Very dark results, larger loads and 100% synthetic projects can require more dye, so weigh the dry fabric and follow the product directions.
Common causes include too little dye for the fabric weight, water that was not hot enough, crowded fabric, insufficient stirring or a fibre content that needed DyeMore rather than All-Purpose Dye.
It may darken the area, but bleach can damage the fibre itself, so the spot may still absorb dye differently. A perfectly uniform result cannot be guaranteed on chemically damaged fabric.
